Biomechanical Assessment

Biomechanics is a scientific discipline based on the law of mechanics that studies mechanical parameters of human motion. Biomechanical assessments critically analyse your body and all its moving parts. It can be helpful for you if you're involved in sport and/or if you want to save energy and maximise normal resources for normal day-to-day movements. Often, people think that Biomechanical Assessments are simply looking at foot and ankle alignment and motion. Here at Sheffield Sports Medicine, they are so much more.

Our thorough Biomechanical Assessments give our practitioners a greater understanding of how your body works in it's entirety. We look at your feet, legs, pelvis and upper body and their relationship with one another, because everything is connected

Conducting biomechanical assessments allows our practitioners to develop a treatment plan to:

  • Optimise your joint alignment

  • Prevent wear and tear within joints

  • Maximise force production

  • Prevent injury

  • Improve athletic performance

How it works

Before your Biomechanical Assessment, you will have had a thorough discussion with our experts about any aches or pains you have, your medical history and goals. Following this, our practitioners will watch you as you complete a variety of movements. This allows us to see which parts of your body is moving too much, not enough and/or if there are any dysfunctions present that are limiting your movement.

We use Slow Motion Video and photographic analysis of your movement to show how the body adapts to movement and training over time. This slow motion video along with the expertise from our experts can also spot mechanical faults that may cause future injuries and highlight areas of weakness.

Sport Biomechanics

Whether you're an amateur or a professional sports person, if you're ready to take your sport to the next level, coming in to our clinic is the logical next step. We have worked with:

  • Olympic Gold Medallists

  • Premier League Footballers

  • International Rugby Athletes

  • Commonwealth Boxing Champions

to help them boost their athletic performance and stay injury-free.

By undergoing a sport biomechanics assessment, we can help you improve performance and minimise your risk of injury by teaching you and helping you condition your body to develop a more effective movement technique.

We use Dartfish technology – the leading experts in sports performance analysis. With this resource we are able to:

  • Show you your videos instantly making it much easier for you to understand and correct in real-time

  • Observe your biomechanics using overlay, side-by-side comparison, and from different angles, all at the same time

  • Track movement and trajectory to show you strengths and weaknesses in your technique

  • Track your progress over time so we can make sure you are improving and staying on target to reach your goals

Running Biomechanics

Just because you can walk, it doesn't mean you can run. If you've ever been injured from running, I'm sure you have a firm grasp of this! Although running is similar to walking, there are key differences. To run well, you need, good balance, muscle strength and a good range of movement in your joints. We see many people in our clinic that love to run but keep getting injured. This can simply be because they do not have the correct running technique or equipment. By taking measurements, using computer simulation and mathematical modelling our running biomechanics assessments are second to none.

We analyse:

  • Stride length

  • Running style

  • Running technique and running speed

  • Areas of overload

We then help you to optimise your muscle recruitment and performance. For more information on our running biomechanics services, head to our Running Technique Assessment page.
