Kinesio Tape For Neck And Shoulder Pain
Kinesio Tape is a fantastic resource that our physical therapists utilise at Sheffield Sports Medicine to facilitate the body's natural healing processes.
Not only can it help with neck and shoulder pain but it can also instantly help with:
Joint paint
Knee pain
Alleviating headaches, and more.
Kinesio Tape is a widely used, extremely effective method to help with relieving pain, injury rehabilitation and injury prevention.
Kinesio tape is an elastic adhesive tape. It is the tension on the tape that gives it it's properties of being able to both relax and stimulate your muscles. KT Tape is a latex-free, hypoallergenic, cotton fibre that can stay on for up to a week. It is suitable and safe for anyone that wants to get out of pain, improve their range of motion or improve their sports performance.
One of the main benefits of Kinesio Tape is that can continue to provide soft tissue manipulation after your treatment at Sheffield Sports Medicine. It therefore aids your recovery by continuing to treat you even when you are away from the treatment room.
Muscle support tape
Invented by Dr Kenso Kase in 1973, Kinesio Tape has only grown in popularity since. It's versatility speaks for itself. Kinesio tape can help:
Support your muscles
Reposition subluxed joints
Relieve pressure
Reduce muscle tightness
Re-educate correct muscle co-ordination
Alleviate swelling
Mobilise scar tissue
Reduce lymphoma
Reduce menstrual pain
Help with insomnia
Kinesio tape isn't just for athletes, it is safe and popular for anyone - young and old. And it can have a big impact on your recovery from orthopaedic, neuromuscular, neurological and many other conditions.
KT Tape Basics
Once you have had your assessment with one of our experts, we may use the Kinesio Tape to aid your recovery.
What we find during your assessment will dictate how we apply the tape. KT Tape can be applied to your body in a multitude of ways. We usually apply the tape in strips, 'X' or 'Y' - type shapes in different directions and with varying amount of stretch applied with each application.
KT Tape works at a microscopic level to lift the skin away from the muscle to improve circulation of the lymph and blood. This facilitates a decrease in pressure on the neural and sensory receptors so alleviates pain, inflammation and allows for a better flow of lymphatic fluid in and out of the area of discomfort.
KT Tape for injuries
The epidermis - the space between the skin and muscle - contains many nerve receptors that send very specific information to your brain. This is called your somatosensory system.
The somatosensory system is part of your sensory system that relays sensations such as temperature, pressure, pain, touch, movement and vibration to your brain. If you are injured and the space between the epidermis and the muscle is compressed, these nerve receptors send signals to your brain to react in a specific way.
KT Tape works by targeting different receptors in your somatosensory system. By relieving pressure on the injured area, the tape can help create a less reactive response in the body by altering the information that your nerves are sending to your brain. This gives your body a chance to operate more normally and helps remove some of the obstacles that normally slow down your body's healing process.
KT Tape for athletes
The increased space between the dermis and the muscle allows for a better environment for your muscles to contract more efficiently. This means more fluid can be pushed through your muscles so you can have a greater muscle performance. As a result, you will have a better quality muscle contraction, a decrease in muscle fatigue, and increased range of motion.
